Give a Gift of Trees and You’ll Plant Forests

Give the gift of trees and you’ll be giving a forest!  Help the HFF plant and manage trees that create native and species-rich forests in the best growing hardwood regions of the United States. Make a gift donation to the HFF on behalf of your favorite tree lover and send them a personalized e-card (see donate box at left). By making a tax-deductible donation to the Hardwood Forestry Fund you support healthy wildlife habitats and the forest animals that depend on them, help clean the air, protect stream water, educate private landowners about sustainable forest management, and create species diverse forests on critical sites.  You also help grow the types of trees used to make quality and long lasting products like hardwood floors, furniture, cabinetry, guitars, pianos, shutters, moulding and millwork, plywood, lumber, architectural panels, decorative accessories, woodworking supplies, picture frames, wooden spoons, craft items, specialty boxes, art, and much more….

Here are some of the projects that your donation will help support:

The Hardwood Forestry Fund was successful in obtaining seven new tree planting project proposals and one natural regeneration project for initiation in spring 2010/2011.  All projects are managed for multiple use by professional foresters.  The projects collectively improve more than 300 acres and establish productive and educational forests of red oak, white oak, black cherry, black walnut, butternut, sugar maple, basswood, hickory, and other native hardwoods valuable to commercial and wildlife purposes.

To sponsor, co-sponsor, or donate toward one of these projects, please contact HFF staff at Barbara@hardwoodforestryfund.org.

Project # 229
Project Partner: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
17,000+ trees
Target planting date: spring 2010
FUNDING STATUS: ADOPTED BY ARMSTRONG WORLD INDUSTRIES
This reforestation project plants trees on idle agricultural land in spring 2010. Benefits include closing gaps in the existing forest landscape, providing additional habitat for plants and animals needing interior forest conditions, and producing quality forest resources.  Seedlings to be planted include: red oak, white oak, black cherry, black walnut, and butternut.

Project #230
Project Partner: Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
20,000+ trees
Target planting date: Spring 2011
FUNDING STATUS: Available for sponsorship or co-sponsorship
Project cost:  $5,209
This project plants young trees in the understory of an existing mature forest that is weakened by disease. By removing the existing diseased trees and planting healthy black cherry and sugar maple seedlings on the site, the forester will increase species diversity and help improve overall health and vigor of the forest stand.

Project # 231
Project Partner: Vernon County Wisconsin
7,000 trees
Target planting date: April 2010
FUNDING STATUS: ADOPTED BY BROOKSIDE VENEERS LTD.
The focus of this tree planting is to reforest an open site using a mix of native hardwoods that include white oak, red oak, swamp white oak, black cherry, and black walnut.  The planting improves wildlife habitat for interior songbirds, ruffed grouse, deer, squirrels, and wild turkey. Other benefits include water quality protection, soil conservation, and forest products.

Project #232
Project Partner: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry
21,000+ trees
Target planting date: April 2010
FUNDING STATUS: Available for sponsorship or co-sponsorship
Project cost: $9,450
By planting a mix of native hardwood seedlings at close spacing, the forest will mimic natural regeneration. This project is beneficial because it connects forest fragments, limits suitable habitat for invasive grasses, produces high quality oak, and demonstrates sustainable forestry partnerships between community and public natural resource agencies. Target tree species include northern red oak, white oak, black walnut, black cherry.

Project # 233
Project Partners: Friends of Raystown Lake, Pennsylvania and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
8,000 trees
Target planting date: March 2010
FUNDING STATUS: ADOPTED BY ARMSTRONG WORLD INDUSTRIES
This tree planting projects adds young hardwoods to an existing forest understory that lacks significant numbers and diversity of natural regeneration. These trees are selected for their ability to grow well on the site and to provide food for wildlife. Forest diversity adds to improved forest health and help forests resist specific pest damage. Target species include red oak, and black cherry.

Project #234
Project Partner: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
10, 000+ trees
Target planting date: April 2010
FUNDING STATUS:Available for sponsorship or co-sponsorship
Project Cost: $3,404
The project uses direct seeding and seedling planting to reforest a site with high quality hardwoods including oaks, and black walnut. The reason the forester wants to proactively plant and manage this site is that it would transition to a lower value forest like boxelder and cottonwood if left unattended. Planting red oak, white oak, and black walnut creates a species rich forest that supports an abundant array of wildlife dependent on acorns and nuts.

Project # 235
Project Partner: City of Richland Center Community Forest (WI)
22,000+ trees
Target planting date:  April 2010
FUNDING STATUS: Available for sponsorship or co-sponsorship
Project cost: $5,450
This project establishes an emerging forest of mixed native hardwoods that include red oak, basswood, black cherry, white oak, sugar maple, and hickory.  By adding these trees to the understory, we help the next generation of forest be of high quality for wildlife and forest products. This project has strong educational value because it demonstrates active forest management to private landowners in the local community.

Project # 236
Project Partner: West Virginia Division of Forestry
500,000 trees
Target project date: 2010
FUNDING STATUS: ADOPTED BY ARMSTRONG WORLD INDUSTRIES
This project enhances regeneration of red oak, black cherry and yellow poplar as viable components of the forest and benefits the wildlife that is dependent on these tree species for food. The project has educational value because it demonstrates to the general public that a diverse mix of animal and plant species can be maintained through prudent forest management.

The Hardwood Forestry Fund is a 501 (c) (3) educational foundation that establishes sustainable forests for future generations' natural resource needs. Contributions are tax-deductible.
