The Hardwood Forestry Fund is a niche program that enables environmentally concerned companies, conservation foundations, and individuals to replace trees and establish sustainable forests through tree planting, direct seeding, and natural regeneration project funding. Here is our project list . Since 1990, our contributors have provided funding for more than 4.4 million new trees, improving 7,100 acres on more than 240 unique projects in 26 states. By joining the Hardwood Forestry Fund, our members give back to the forests that support their businesses, and plan for a future with healthy and abundant natural resources.  Manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, artisans, architects, woodworkers, and consumers who value the strength, durability, and warmth of wood are invited to join with the Hardwood Forestry Fund to replenish target sites with high quality hardwoods.

Rockler Celebrates Earth Day With Goal To Plant Over 10,000 Hardwood Trees – Company Partners with Hardwood Forestry Fund

Medina, MN (April 19, 2011) – Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has partnered with the Hardwood Forestry Fund to plant over 10,000 hardwood trees. As part of an event that celebrates Earth Day on April 20, Rockler will donate the price of one tree for every purchase made at their website, www.Rockler.com, during the week of April 20-27.

The Hardwood Forestry Fund will use Rockler’s monetary donation to plant trees in the United States on public lands managed by professional foresters. The not-for-profit, educational organization targets planting and management of commercially valuable hardwoods, including black cherry, black walnut, red oak, hard maple, hickory, ash, and others. All trees planted by the Hardwood Forestry Fund require a management plan, harvest, and regeneration schedule.

“Teaming with the Hardwood Forestry Fund helps ensure future generations will enjoy the beauty and many uses of trees throughout the natural life of our hardwood forests,” said Scott Ekman, Vice President of Marketing at Rockler. “As the benefactors of harvested trees, our partnership to plant trees helps woodworkers understand the importance of supporting organizations like the Hardwood Forestry Fund.”

“As a woodworker myself, I’m excited to work with Rockler on this project,” said Rick Philipps, HFF Chairman. “We know woodworkers have a deep connection to hardwood trees, and share our commitment to being good stewards of this sustainable resource.”

Woodworkers interested in participating in the Rockler tree-planting program can place an order on Rockler.com between April 20-27.

Matching native hardwoods to the site, the tree planting helps educate the public through visual proof that trees are a renewable resource that can be managed in a sustainable manner.  In addition to improving aesthetics, this project restores trees on idle public land.  A mix of native hardwoods was chosen by the forester targeting approximately equal numbers of Green ash, White oak, Shumard oak, Tulip poplar, Black walnut, White ash, Northern red oak, Black oak, and Black cherry.

Project manager reports that the trees are maturing, most are in the 4-8 ft height range at 9′ X 6′ ft spacing. The multiple plantings have an 80% survival rate and the general health is fair to good.  The areas are being watched for perennial weed competition.

Our project partner is Sycamore Trails Resource Conservation and Development Council (STRC&D).  Funding is provided by all Hardwood Forestry Fund members.

  • Project Type: Seedling planting
  • Project Initiation Date: 2004
