The Loess Hills State Forest project planted two sites totaling 40 acres. The project manager’s November 2009 report includes 75% survival and a stocking of 600 trees per acre. In November 2009, the trees measured 2-3 ” in diameter and ranged from 8-15 ft tall. The project manager has hosted 2 educational field days at the planting sites. These were held fall of 2003 and fall of 2007. Attendance included 35 private landowners at each event.
Each year the project manager hosts a forestry field day at the Loess Hills State Forest. The event is held around October 15th, and natural resources staff demonstrate projects from tree plantings, sawmilling, harvesting, underplanting, timber stand improvement, wildlife projects, seedling protection devices, burning woodlands and prairies, plant ID, and noxious weed workshops. The HFF planting sites are part of the demonstration efforts.
Project partners include the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division, Golden Hills Resource Conservation and Development, and the Hardwood Forestry Fund.
This project is proudly sponsored by all Hardwood Forestry Fund members.
